About Jessica

"I am a Conveyancing Secretary at Seymore du Toit and Basson Attorneys.  My role involves managing property transfers from instruction to registration, communicating with clients, estate agents and financial institutions, preparing documentation, and ensuring that every transfer progresses smoothly.

I work in a fast-paced environment that requires attention to detail and strong organisational skills.  I’ve been with my firm for over a year, and every day continues to teach me something new.

My background has always been in administration and client service, but I found my passion here.  Working in a legal environment inspired me to deepen my knowledge, which is why I enrolled in the Conveyancing for secretaries course through Gawie le Roux.

I believe in continuous learning and always strive to improve my skills so I can better support my team and provide excellent service to clients."

On enrolling at the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law

"I wanted more than practical experience; I wanted to understand the legal principles behind the work I do every day and grow more confident in my work, which is why I am now starting with my second course as well.

I did the self-study option as I did not have the time to attend the lectures.  The study material was easy to understand and very clear.  The course was engaging and relevant to everyday work."

On facing challenges

"Balancing a full-time job, studying, and being a wife and a mother wasn’t always easy.  I stayed longer after work just to squeeze in a little more studying time, other than weekends.

I have a wonderful support system at work and at home; it has made a world of difference.

Even though I had to write my practical with swine flu, I managed to get a distinction of 86%."

Jessica's practical tips for paralegals

  • "Stay consistent with your studies instead of cramming before exams.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Try to relate the course material to the files you work on every day.  The more you apply what you learn in practice, the easier it becomes to understand.
  • Most importantly, believe in yourself even when the workload is overwhelming."

"Your mind is stronger than you think and if you feed it positivity you will have an amazing outcome."

Key takeaways

  • "I have a much deeper understanding of the legal principles behind the practical work.
  • Increased confidence in my daily work and decision-making.
  • The importance of continuous learning and investing in yourself, regardless of how busy life becomes."
