Practical vocational training

The Gawie le Roux Institute of Law offers LPC-accredited 150-hour and 400-hour practical vocational training (PVT) programmes for prospective candidate attorneys and candidate attorneys under contract (articles).  These programmes are commonly known as “practical legal training” (PLT), or “law school”.

Why attend the GLR PVT School?

Unique features of our programme:

  • You can do the entire programme online from your home.  In addition, for two important subjects you have the option to meet your lecturers and fellow students in person.
  • Note:  recordings will be available for most subjects, but two subjects require “real-time” attendance (either online or in-person).  See the ‘logistics’ section for more information.
  • Study notes for each prescribed subject, compiled by the relevant lecturer, will be provided to assist with focused learning.
  • Highly experienced legal practitioners, known for excellence in their respective fields, will guide you through the material.
Two routes

Depending on your situation, you may choose one of the following two programmes:

150-hour programme

  • Scenario 1: If you’re serving under a two-year PVT contract (articles) or have completed such a contract.

400-hour  programme

  • Scenario 1: If you don’t have a contract (articles) yet.
  • Scenario 2: If you have served for more than one year under a two-year contract and completed this programme during that first year “outside your working hours”, then this programme allows you to apply for admission and enrolment.
Which programme will suit you best?
  150-notional hours 400-notional hours
PVT contract If you intend to or are serving under a two-year PVT contract. If you are not serving under a PVT contract, or if you want to conclude a one-year contract.
Exam You may only write the attorneys’ admission exams after having served six months under a PVT contract.

You may write the attorneys’ admission exams immediately after completion of this programme.

Duration Four months (with fewer lectures and prescribed study hours). Four months (with more lectures and prescribed study hours).
Programme fees R13,300 (once off) R20,000 (once off)
Training Less comprehensive.  Candidates will be required to do more on their own and rely more on training at the workplace – hence the requirement of a 24-month contract (articles). A comprehensive programme that will better equip candidates for the workplace – hence the allowance of a reduced contract period of just one year (12 months).
Awards ceremony

We host an annual awards ceremony to celebrate the success of all our PVT students.  This is also a networking opportunity. The top achievers will receive vouchers for upskilling at our Institute.
