About Conny
"I began in science, studying Biology with majors in Genetics and Microbiology.
Then God called me to law. It was a significant pivot, but it brought clarity to something I had always known about myself. I have a justice-oriented mind and a strong sense of right and wrong, and law felt like an answer to something that had been part of me all along.
My background in science taught me to question, analyse, and look for evidence before reaching a conclusion. Law gave those instincts a new direction. It gave me a way to apply that analytical mind to questions of justice, rights, and advocacy.
My journey has since expanded beyond both science and law. I am also pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration because I believe understanding organisations and the broader business environment will make me a more well-rounded legal practitioner."
On enrolling at the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law
"I first heard about Gawie le Roux from Loretty Mumba, a Candidate Attorney I met while I was doing my LLB practicals. I then researched GLR for myself and immediately liked what I saw.
What attracted me was the flexibility of the programme. I could complete the 400-hour PVT programme while continuing to work, which was important to me because I was working in a non-legal environment. I liked that I did not have to choose between continuing to work and completing my practical training.
What really stood out to me was the opportunity to learn from leading practitioners and trailblazers in the legal profession. That combination of practical training, flexibility, and exposure to experienced practitioners made GLR the right choice for me. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the lecturers. They were knowledgeable, patient, and easy to understand. They welcomed questions and, rather than simply giving you the answer, guided the way you think and challenged you to reason like an attorney.
The tests and assignments also complemented what we were taught. They required us to apply the law to different scenarios and conduct our own research, particularly for the assignments. We were given recommended books and articles, which encouraged us to explore the material further.
What I appreciated most was how GLR broadened my thinking beyond the LLB. It made me realise how much more there is to understand and learn. I genuinely enjoyed studying and found myself wanting to know more rather than feeling like I had to study."
The mock trial
"The mock trial was my favourite part of the entire programme. I thoroughly enjoyed it because it gave me a real taste of litigation and allowed me to experience what it is like to take the law from the books and put it into practice.
I enjoyed having to prepare a case, think through the issues, formulate an argument, and present it. It challenged me to think on my feet and reminded me that litigation is not just about knowing the law, but also about how to apply it, communicate it and respond in the moment.
I also learned that preparing a case is not only about knowing your own case. You need to anticipate what the opposition might raise and be prepared for facts or circumstances that you did not expect. You have to listen carefully, assess new information, and adapt your approach when necessary."
"More than anything, the mock trial confirmed for me that litigation is where I want to be. I genuinely enjoyed the experience and could see myself thriving in that environment."
Conny's tips for PVT students
"I would say the biggest thing is to be intentional about how you use your time. In addition to PVT, I work from 08:00 to 16:30, and I am also studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma, so I had to create my own timetable around my work and other commitments. GLR gave me access to the online material, but the discipline to work through it consistently was up to me.
I also think it is important to give yourself time to rest. I still made time to see friends, relax and watch an episode or two. For me, balance meant knowing when to study and when to switch off, because tomorrow is still another day. I think being consistent is more important than trying to do everything at once."
The top achiever award
"I would like to use the voucher towards one of GLR’s board exam preparation courses. I am still deciding which board exam I need the most support with, but I am confident that whichever course I choose will give me the preparation I need to aim for high marks."
On facing challenges
"There were times when the demands of work and studying became difficult enough that I considered putting my studies on pause. When that happened, I learned that communication was important. Rather than simply trying to push through when things became too much, I would communicate with the person or institution involved, whether that was my employer or my school, depending on the situation."
"That helped me find a way forward without making a decision to give up in the moment. It also taught me that sometimes the best way to deal with a difficult situation is to communicate early and be honest about what you are managing."
What's next?
"My next goal is to pursue my qualifications as a Notary Public and to obtain the Right of Appearance. I believe these are important steps because they will give me the opportunity to develop different areas of legal practice and expand the work I am able to do. Having both will allow me to become a highly versatile legal practitioner and broaden the scope of my legal practice."
