About Dylan

"I started my legal career at Clifford Levin Inc. in 2020 as a clerk.  During my time there, I completed both a BCom Law and an LLB degree with the firm's support.  I began serving my articles at Clifford Levin Inc. in December 2024 before ceding them in October 2025 to join Hutcheon Attorneys, where I am now nearing completion of my articles."

On Gawie le Roux's Attorneys' admission exam courses

"During my articles, I completed GLR's 400-hour PVT programme and the Attorneys' admission exam courses.  The training and support provided by Gawie le Roux were instrumental in shaping my professional growth and legal development.

I found the lecturers to be knowledgeable, engaging, and supportive.  They explained complex legal concepts clearly, encouraged participation, and were always willing to assist when needed.  Their practical insights and guidance were invaluable throughout my training and exam preparation."

Dylan's study tips for the CBE

  • "Start early, stay consistent, and follow a realistic study plan.
  • Focus on understanding the legal principles rather than rote learning, and make use of past exam papers to become familiar with the exam format.
  • Engage actively during lectures, ask questions when needed, and use your practical experience during articles to reinforce your understanding.
  • Most importantly, maintain a disciplined approach and avoid leaving preparation until the last minute."

On facing challenges

"One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing my exam preparation with the demands of my articles.  Managing work responsibilities while studying required careful planning and discipline.  To overcome this, I developed a structured study schedule, set realistic goals, and dedicated specific times each day to revision."

Charting another course

"I learnt a great deal during my time at Clifford Levin Inc, particularly in the areas of labour law, criminal law, the administration of deceased estates, and civil litigation.  I remain extremely grateful to the firm and its practitioners for the guidance, mentorship, and opportunities they provided, all of which played a significant role in my development as a candidate attorney.

Ultimately, my decision to cede my articles was not a reflection on my experience at Clifford Levin Inc, but rather a desire to broaden my exposure and gain experience in a wider range of commercial litigation matters.  Joining Hutcheon Attorneys has provided me with that opportunity, and I am equally grateful to the firm for the trust, mentorship, and invaluable experience it has afforded me.  The training I have received at both firms has contributed significantly to my growth and development as a legal practitioner."

Key lessons learnt so far

"I learnt the importance of being adaptable and embracing new opportunities.  The legal profession requires thorough preparation and meticulous attention to detail, as even minor oversights can have significant consequences."

"Finally, I have learnt that professional growth is an ongoing process.  Staying curious, learning from experienced practitioners, and continually developing my skills are essential to becoming an effective practitioner."

What's next?

"My immediate goal is admission as an attorney and further developing my litigation practice.  I intend to pursue continuing legal education and specialised courses in commercial and civil litigation to strengthen my technical and practical skills."
