Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about The fundamental principles of effective trial advocacy - for attorneys

Wednesday, April 12, 2023, 10:22
Can I attend the LPC-accredited trial advocacy course if I’m not an attorney?

Yes, you can.  By attending this course, and showing your competence during this course, you will receive a certificate enabling you to apply to the LPC for the -
•    right of appearance in the High Court (s 25(3)); or
•    conversion from attorney to advocate (s 32(1)(a)).

Additionally, even if you do not intend to apply for the right of appearance or pursue becoming an advocate, this course is an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills in trial advocacy.

Where and how are the lectures taking place?

We offer several intakes for the course.  Delegates can choose to attend in-person lectures either in Pretoria (Lynnwood) of Cape Town during weekdays or in Pretoria  (Lynnwood) on selected Saturdays.  See the course page for specific dates and fees.

Why is attendance limited?

Attendance is limited at 20 delegates to ensure that lectures are practical, interactive, and delivered in an engaging, hands-on manner.  This smaller class size allows for more personalised attention and better interaction with the lecturer.

Will I receive any study materials for the course?

Yes.  All attendees will receive comprehensive study materials that cover the course content, including notes and case studies, on the first day of class.

Are there any assessments or exams during the course?

Yes.  Participants may be required to complete assessments to demonstrate their understanding of the material.  These assessments will be practical in nature and will contribute to your overall competency in trial advocacy.

What if I cannot attend a lecture?

If you are unable to attend a scheduled lecture, please inform us at your earliest convenience so that we can assist you in rescheduling your class.  Kindly note that if the rescheduling extends to the following year, a fee increase will apply.

Is there a certificate awarded upon completion of the course?

Yes.  Upon successfully completing the course and demonstrating the required competencies, you will receive a certificate that acknowledges your achievement.  You must attend every day of this 5-day course to participate in the mock trial at the end of the course and receive your competency certificate.
