Presenter

Willie van der Westhuizen

Professor Willie van der Westhuizen is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences, both local and international. He is a practising attorney and consultant to Millers Inc, George. He specialises in Trust Law and Holistic Estate Planning and regularly does legal audits on trust deeds and holistic estate planning for various clients, including restructured families.

He also serves as Extraordinary Professor in Private Law at the University of the Free State, where he presents specialised courses on Trusts and Estate Planning Law. He is the co-author of Wills and Trusts; Estate Planning and Fiduciary Services Guide and the entire Butterworths’ publication, Forms & Precedents: Estates, as well as all three LexisNexis publications. He has written and published numerous articles on Trust Law and related topics. For more than two decades he has presented seminars and spoken at conferences on these topics to lawyers, accountants and other advisers countrywide in the RSA and Namibia as well as overseas.

He serves on the Trusts and Estates Standing Committee of the South African Law Society and is a full member of the international UK-based Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). At recent international STEP conferences, he presented papers entitled “Bad trust clauses in the RSA and their consequences”, “Cross-border holistic planning with Namibia” and “Trusts in Namibia”. As a member of the International Bar Association (IBA), he has delivered papers at IBA conferences in Strasbourg, New York and Hong Kong on such topics as "Restrictions on testamentary freedom", "Application possibilities of the trust in South Africa" and "Business trusts for privately owned businesses in South Africa”.
